Listary 7.1 Beta is here | Rewritten in Rust: up to 4× faster, 34% less memory (Oct 8)

Listary 7.1 Beta is ready to try! This is a major update: Listary 7 has been rebuilt in Rust, with a focus on speed and lower resource use. The launcher opens faster, search results arrive sooner, and memory use is lower. We’ve also fixed many of the issues you reported here.

If you’re on 7.0, check for updates to upgrade. If 7.1 doesn’t appear, or you’re using Listary 6 or installing for the first time, download it here. You can install it over your current version.

This release supports x64 PCs running Windows 10 or 11. ARM PCs aren’t supported yet; please keep your current version for now.

What’s new

  • Faster and lighter. In our tests on the same laptop, compared with 7.0, search was up to 4× faster, memory use fell by 34%, and building the index from scratch went from 21 seconds to 7 seconds. Shared graphics memory use also dropped from 77 MB to zero, measured separately from process memory.
  • UI refinements. Menus have rounded corners and softer shadows. Search bars in File Explorer and file dialogs have a unified rounded design, and folder paths use breadcrumb navigation.
  • More ways to work in the File Search Window. Drag multiple selected results together, Ctrl+click sidebar filters to combine them, and use command hotkeys that previously didn’t work in this window.
  • Better diagnostics. If a file isn’t showing up in search, the Diagnostic Tool (Options > About) helps identify the cause and walks you through troubleshooting.

Thank you

You reported these, and they’re fixed now. Thank you!

  • Search results are ranked more accurately. Better name matches come first, and previously opened files no longer get grouped ahead of them. Thanks @vinieux, @disillusioned and @jamesr (t/9556, post).
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the first attempt to eject a USB drive to fail. Drives indexed as a whole are also reindexed when reconnected after being unplugged without Safely Remove. Thanks @ASUNDER, @horst and @Stefan_Iordache (t/10243, t/10182, t/10053).
  • Fixed a settings issue on Windows systems using a non-Gregorian calendar, where only the first change was saved. Listary also now alerts you if settings can’t be saved. Thanks @AVI (t/10289).

Installation and update notes

  • Windows on ARM: The 7.1 installer won’t run on ARM PCs yet. If you receive an update prompt, skip it and keep your current version. ARM support is coming soon.
  • Updating from Listary 6: We haven’t started offering 7.1 through the V6 updater yet. We’d like to give the beta more time to settle first. If you want to try it now, use the download link above.

Hi Listary team,

Congrats on Listary 7! The speed and overall performance improvements are fantastic.

I am facing an issue where the Listary toolbar does not appear in “Open / Save As” dialogs in Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Thunderbird.

  • OS: Windows 11 (x64) | Listary: 7.x

  • Works fine in Notepad and Spotify, but fails in browsers & mail clients.

  • Ctrl + G does not trigger it either.

  • Tested on two separate PCs: everything worked perfectly on v6.3, but upgrading to v7 broke the toolbar attachment in these applications on both machines.

It looks like a hooking issue specific to browser and email client file pickers in v7. Could you please look into it?

Thanks!

NO problems here on Windows 11 26H2 x64 with Firefox and Edge…
The font resolution in listary probably needs to be increased…

Listary 7.1.0.43 Beta is out. It brings three main improvements and fixes a number of issues you reported here.

New: see how fast search is on your PC

Open Options > About to see how long a search takes on your computer, how many files Listary can find, and how many times a day you open it. You can also run a speed test that times five common searches.

Post a screenshot of your speed test result in this thread. We’d love to see how fast it is on your PC.

About 50 MB less memory

Memory use is now 34% lower than in 7.0.

Korean initial-consonant search

Type only the initial consonant of each syllable. For example, ㄱㅅ finds 감사.txt.

Other improvements

  • Multiple File Search Windows can be open at the same time again, as in earlier versions.
  • “Do not index” is renamed to “Exclude from search results”. These files are still indexed, but don’t show up in results.
  • The Twitter web search is renamed to X, and its keyword is now x.
  • Several fixes for Quick Switch and the search bar in file dialogs.

Thank you

You reported these here, and they’re fixed in this version:

  • The UAC prompt now comes to the front when you open an admin program from the launcher. Thanks @J_Liu (t/9793)
  • Dates, times and numbers follow your Windows regional format again. Thanks @nminchin and @Rabbitslug (t/9477)
  • A drive you turned off for indexing no longer turns itself back on. Thanks @ASUNDER (t/10182)
  • “Do not index” now says what it does. Thanks @songch (t/10264)
  • Web search suggestions no longer flicker while you type. Thanks @xiejx5 (t/9633)

How to update

  • Already on Listary 7: open Options > About and click Check for Updates.
  • On Listary 6 or installing fresh: download Listary 7.1.0.43 Beta and install it over your current version.

@riteshpgi Thanks for testing Firefox and Edge! 7.1.0.43 makes the text clearer. Could you update and let us know how it looks now?

@jamesr Thanks for testing on two PCs. We tried Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Thunderbird here, and the search bar shows up in their Open and Save dialogs. Listary 7 is a new program, so your security software or Windows may be blocking it. Could you check your antivirus and firewall, and Windows Security > App & browser control > Exploit protection? Adding Listary to the trusted list often fixes this.

The edges are still not sharp. The resolution could be increased…

Listary in the rewritten versions does not accept keyboard input at all. I call the command-palette, but I cannot type in there. I am on 7.1.0.43.

Thanks for the feedback. Could you send us the logs? You can email them to support@listary.com.

You can find the log here: %APPDATA%\Listary\UserProfile\Cache\%COMPUTERNAME%

Thank you very much!
